Why some people can eat all they want

re and more research is pointing to the fact that what you eat affects your genes which in turn, ultimately controls not only your health but also your body shape.

Researchers at Tufts University examined how calories from fat, carbohydrate and protein interact with genes to affect body weight and composition (the amount of lean mass and fat mass each of us possess).

The scientists analyzed several common gene variants known as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the apolipoprotein A5 gene which produces a protein (APOA5) involved in the metabolism of fats in the body.

Results showed that an interaction between APOA5 and dietary fat intake was observed. This relationship was not apparent with dietary carbohydrates or protein. The results of this study suggest that for most of the people, a high-fat diet translates into a gain in body weight and fat mass. However, for some people with this specific SNP, fat intake was not significantly related to higher body weight and fat mass, regardless of the person’s age, ****, physical activity status, or the amount of total calories consumed.

For these lucky people with the select SNP, it does not matter whether they eat cheesecake or four pieces of whole wheat bread - if the foods have the same amount of calories, they won’t gain weight or body fat. These results help to explain why some people gain weight (body fat) easily but also why some people can eat a high-fat diet and not gain weight.
